Halloween Children’s Books that are Spooky and Fun!

A selection of Halloween-themed children’s books displayed with colorful covers under a sign that reads “Spooky & Festive Halloween Books!”.

Looking for some new Halloween children’s books? I recently went on a shopping spree for Halloween read-alouds your class will go batty for!  I picked out my favorites to share with you. Most of these are probably on YouTube as read-alouds so you can see if you like them! Keep reading to see all my picks.

General Halloween Books for Kids

These first two books are perfect for introducing some fun, general Halloween themes!

Two children's books with fall themes: "Halloween in the Orchard" and "The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything" displayed side by side on a white surface.

First is Halloween in the Orchard. I love all the festivities that this family takes part in and sees at the orchard!

Second is The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything: A Delightful Halloween Read-Aloud Story about Overcoming Fears.

A hand holds the book "Halloween Is..." by Gail Gibbons next to "The Halloween Tree" by Susan Montanari and Teresa Martinez, both eye-catching Halloween Children's Books with festive, spooky covers.

I love the illustrations in the Halloween Is… book. Her books always have really fun pictures. The only thing I would caution is there are a couple “legends” that could be not appropriate for the classroom- one is about a “Jack” who died and wasn’t allowed to go to the heaven. So, just read through the book and decide if you want to skip any pages. But like I said, I really love the pictures and other pages in this book.

Halloween Tree is a fun book about a grumpy tree in a Christmas tree farm that doesn’t get chosen, but ends up being decorated as a Halloween tree.

Fun Pumpkin Halloween Books for Kids

There are so many fun pumpkin books you could read to your kids.

Two Halloween children's books about pumpkins are shown: "Spookley the Square Pumpkin" with a yellow cover, and "Too Many Pumpkins" with an illustrated pumpkin patch—perfect fun Halloween books for young readers.

The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin is about respecting and appreciating our differences. Too Many Pumpkins shows how someone can make other people happy by being generous!

A person holds the book "How Big Could Your Pumpkin Grow?" by Wendell Minor, with two open spreads showing pumpkins near famous U.S. landmarks—a fun children's book that's perfect for Halloween storytime.

How Big Could Your Pumpkin Grow? really made me smile! I love how it shows a ginormous pumpkin in unexpected places.

Two Halloween children's books about pumpkins are shown: "Pumpkin Jack" featuring a carved pumpkin on leaves, and "Pumpkin Circle" with an orange pumpkin close-up on the cover—perfect fun Halloween books for young readers.

These two pumpkin books are about the pumpkin life cycle. Pumpkin Jack is a sweet story about a boy with a pumpkin friend and his life cycle. Circle: The Story of a Garden is an interesting Science non-fiction book.

Leaf Children’s Books

Two fun children's books about autumn—"We're Going on a Leaf Hunt" and "Why Do Leaves Change Color?"—are shown side by side on a white surface, surrounded by illustrated leaves.

These two books would be great for an art project about leaves! We’re Going on a Leaf Hunt is based on that popular song “We’re going on a bear hunt!” Very cute. Why Do Leaves Change Color? is another non-fiction Science book.

Popular Halloween Creature Books for Kids

Two fun children's books are shown: "Walter's Wonderful Web," starring a clever spider, and "I'm Not Scary," featuring a bat in a forest—perfect picks for fans of fun or spooky children's books.

These two Halloween children’s books about creatures are the perfect complement to art projects! First, Walter’s Wonderful Web is a must-have book if you are doing a spider art project or craft. It also teaches about shapes! I’m Not Scary is a great book about friendship and ties in nicely to a bat theme.

A hand holds two Halloween children's books: "Bookley the Book-Loving Ghost" with a colorful library cover, and "The Little Ghost Who Didn’t Like to Be Scary" with a black cover featuring a white ghost.

Bookley the Book-Loving Ghost is a book about a sweet ghost who lives at the library and picks out his favorite books for the librarian to read. The Little Ghost who didn’t like to be scary is about exactly what the title says!

Three Halloween children's books are displayed: "Pumpkins on Strike," "Gustavo the Shy Ghost," and "Chicka Chicka Trick a Treat"—perfect spooky children's books for a fun night of seasonal reading.

These three books are also fun seasonal reads! First, your kids will enjoy the funny book Pumpkins on Strike. This author also has a large series of “on strike” books including Pencils on Strike, Scissors on Strike, Erasers on Strike, etc. Gustavo The Shy Ghost is a perfect story book (one of my favorite Halloween books) to go along with a ghost art project. The story is so sweet! Your students will love Chicka Chicka Tricka Treat if they are already familiar with the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom book.

Four colorful Halloween Children's Books arranged overlapping, featuring pumpkins, cats, and seasonal decorations on their covers—perfect for sparking excitement in young readers during the spooky season.

These last four books are cute for a younger crowd!

Don’t Push the Button is cute for Pre-K and younger, same with The Very Hungry Caterpillar’s Creepy-Crawly Halloween. I love the colors and Halloween fun in The Spooky Wheels on the Bus and Pete the Cat Trick or Pete (these two would be suitable for Kindergarten as well.)
