Collaborative Class Artworks

Every year our school has a family FUNdraiser with a silent auction portion.  My art classes always contribute a few artworks to the auction.  This year, I came across an idea on an art teacher Facebook group.  The canvas had the words “You are my sunshine” written across the middle.  Each student contributed a sunshine drawn with Sharpie markers or paint markers.  We used painted white wooden cradled canvases similar to this one.

First I did You are My Sunshine with the Kindergartners.

The 3rd graders did Welcome Home.

Some of our past auction artworks include:

Alphabet Stool, decoupaged and painted

A School of Fish painting (approximately 22″ x 28″)  We took the painting to an office supply store (either Office Depot or Office Max) and they scanned it and printed it for us as a poster.  The copy is framed and hanging at our school and you can barely tell it is a copy.

We have also done carved rubber stamp pictures.

This is a fingerprint butterfly picture we did one year.

These were super fun collaborative circle paintings.

Some of the parents have also been very helpful in organizing art projects for the auction.  Here are some beautiful paper marbled butterflies a parent taught and put together.

what wonderful ideas!! I have had my eye the collaborative circle painting after recently watching your wonderful video. Could you give us artsy people some tips on how you gave directions for this ( like how did the children not muddy the colors, they look so vibrant). Also, what kind of paint did you use. thank you !!

    • Each kid had one color and one brush and they had to walk around the canvas using that color. If they wanted to change colors, they had to get a new brush and new color. I told them to paint their circles and designs, but try not to paint on top of anyone else’s designs. We used acrylic paints.

I'd love to hear your thoughts!
