Round-Up of Name Design Art Projects

Hi! Today I have a round-up of Name Design art projects for you.

Name projects are wonderful to do at the beginning of the year for a number of reasons. First, it is a great way to learn all your students’ names. Second, it’s a great way for students to share about themselves. You can easily tie in personal interests to name designs. Third, it’s a familiar subject matter to kids and a less intimidating way to start the year.

There are a lot of great books to read on the first day of school in art class! (Amazon Affiliate links have been used. The small commission earned goes to support the costs of this blog.)

Here are 3 of my favorites:

My Name, by Supriya Kelkar is a good book to read at the start of a name project.

Book cover of "My Name" by Supriya Kelkar and Sandhya Prabhat, featuring an illustration of a child surrounded by various scenes of family, daily life, and name design art projects.
  1. Simple Name Designs: Create a simple name design showing a few personal interests. See this blog post for step-by-step directions.
Colorful, hand-drawn name design featuring the word "Marcia" with playful drawings of an ice cream cone, dog, rainbow, paint palette, and clouds.

2. Grid Name Designs: Create a patterned grid of repeated letters of your name. Click here to learn more and get a free printable grid.

3. Radial Name Design: Here is a lesson I used to do with my 5th/6th grade students. I really like how these designs turned out. So beautiful! Read here for directions.

Radial Name Designs with vibrant hand-drawn symmetrical patterns and bold, colorful shapes in yellow, red, blue, and purple.

4. Graffiti Names: We used Art from Trista’s tutorial to create our own graffiti names in my 4th/5th grade classes. These were so much fun! The kids especially like using paint markers.

5. Name Rockets. For my littlest ones, we made Name Rockets, using construction paper, metallic markers and stickers.

A rocket made from colored paper spells out "MARCIA" on a black background, surrounded by cut-out planets, stars, and a sun. This Name Design Art beautifully captures creativity and celestial charm.

6. Doodled Name Design – Write your name in block or bubble letters. Trace with a Sharpie marker. Fill it in with patterns. Add more doodles and designs to the background. Color your designs!

The word “TAYLOR” is written in large, colorful, patterned letters—perfect for Back to School art projects—surrounded by whimsical doodles of shapes, stars, hearts, and lines on a white background.
