Painted Initials with First Grade | First day of Art

Three colorful paintings of dotted initials on white paper with painted backgrounds are displayed above the text "Painted Initials," making this a perfect First Grade art project.
A colorful beaded necklace is painted over a background of large, soft pastel watercolor shapes on white paper, making it a delightful First Grade art project.

We read the book The Dot and the students received papers with their first initial drawn in pencil.  The students then used crayons to draw dots and circles on their initial.  Using watercolor paints, they painted dots and circles and made marks in the background.  The crayon acted as a resist to the paint, so the crayon was still visible even if paint was on top.

Five watercolor paintings with colorful dots and shapes, each featuring a large painted initial—A, K, S, L, or G—outlined in dots or lines. Perfect as a First Grade art activity to inspire creativity and letter recognition.

  1. I love the patterns and individual freedom each student shows in their design. It makes me want to find a copy of the book to read. I can see incorporating this into a Sunday School lesson with my 4 & 5 year olds. Thanks for sharing!
