Color Scheme Studies with 3rd Grade

A set of four abstract panels on a white background, labeled Analogous, Warm, Rainbow, and Cool, studies colorful geometric shapes.

My third grade classes studied color theory by using the color wheel.  They learned about many different color schemes including warm, cool, neutral, primary, secondary, rainbow, analogous, monochromatic and complementary.  First, they started by coloring in this Color Wheel worksheet.  (I added monochromatic and neutral to the list.)

Four abstract, colorful drawings labeled: Rainbow, Cool, Warm, and Monochromatic displayed on a pink background. These vibrant pieces explore different color schemes and are ideal for 3rd Grade art studies.

On 8.5″ x 5.5″ white copy paper, the students drew a design that had rhythm through the use of repeating lines or shapes.  We talked about how rhythm in art is similar to rhythm in music.. it is like a visual beat.

Then, the papers were photocopied 4 times.  The students colored 4 of these in different color schemes that they chose from their sheet. We left the original uncolored in case they needed a new copy. They used colored pencils and woodless colored pencils to color their designs.

Four abstract drawings explore stars and circles in warm, cool, monochromatic, and rainbow color schemes as part of 3rd Grade Color Scheme Studies. Four colorful paintings displaying warm, cool, primary, and rainbow colors, each featuring flowers and abstract designs. Four colorful crayon drawings of rainbows and flowers, each labeled with a different color scheme: cool, warm, monochromatic. Four colorful abstract drawings with wavy lines and shapes, divided into quadrants with blue, purple, red, and green backgrounds—each showcasing a vibrant color scheme. Vibrant abstract art with wavy lines and star shapes in blue, orange, purple, green, red, and yellow.

  1. I love the way you use the students’ drawings repeatedly to teach the colour concepts. It validates their work and their choices while exploring and learning about colour. Great exercise on so many levels! I will be using this idea next year. Thanks for sharing
