Secret City Drawings: 3rd & 4th Grade

Learn shading!  Practice drawing cubes, spheres and more.  Add dimension and depth to your drawings!  All this can be achieved with SECRET CITY DRAWINGS.  Check out this awesome video.

The kids practice drawing all these forms and then stack them on top of each other, add shading and include fun details to make a “secret city.”  So, what do you think?  Do you have any good ways to introduce drawing forms and shading?

Sketches of mechanical structures and geometric shapes, including a police box and various abstract figures.
Two abstract, monochromatic drawings featuring geometric shapes, pipes, and figures exploring surreal environments.
Four pencil sketches depict abstract geometric structures with interconnected shapes, shaded forms, and coiled tubes—reminiscent of Secret City Drawings often enjoyed in 3rd Grade. One drawing features a small green section with a red arrow.

Here is the book I recommend for this project: Mark Kistler’s Draw Squad. (Amazon affiliate link used at no extra cost to you- the small amount earned goes towards maintaining this website.)

  1. This is too funny. I haven’t thought about the Draw Squad in years. I think it was ’93-94 that I used to show these to my students. I think it would be fun to do this on a fun day now. Thanks for the good memories.
