Lego Brickworld Convention, 2013: Part One

Collage of LEGO creations: Superman, dog, Batman mosaic, and Mario. Background shows an event crowd at Brickworld Convention.Last weekend I took a trip with my husband and daughter to Schaumburg, IL to see the Lego Brickworld Convention.  My husband is an avid Lego collector and builder.  As an art teacher, I saw some fun things I snapped pictures of to share with you.  It was really great to see kids and parents together enjoying a fun hobby.  Many of the exhibits were made by adult Lego builders and others were made by parents with their kids.  Here are some of the highlights and I also took a few short videos to show the moving parts on some.  I broke this up into 2 posts, because there were so many pictures.

Here is the model of the capital building in Madison, WI that my husband built for the exhibit.  Isn’t it great?LEGO model of a large white domed building next to a smaller grey building on a table from the 2013 Brickworld Convention.

The Lego mosaics were among my favorite pieces at the convention.  There were a lot of great mosaics made from flat Legos.  Do you recognize this famous artwork?  I hope so!A large mosaic reproduction of Georges Seurat's "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte," crafted from Lego bricks, was on display at the 2013 Brickworld Convention.

Here is a detail shot of this mosaic, so you can see the type of Legos used to create it.Close-up of a mosaic crafted from lego pieces arranged to form an intricate pattern.

More great mosaics:A display of colorful LEGO pixel art portraits, featuring TV characters, superheroes, and abstract designs is showcased at the Brickworld convention exhibit.Four Lego mosaics: Lego minifig heads, the Beatles, Tweety Bird and Dilbert, and a red dragon breathing fire displayed at the 2013 Brickworld Convention.

A Mondrian inspired Lego house:Lego building with Mondrian-inspired design, featuring abstract red, yellow, blue, and white blocks and a wired component. This piece was showcased at the 2013 Brickworld Convention.

Another artist inspired mosaic.  This one was The Figure 5 by Charles DemuthLego mosaic featuring a stylized number 5 with the text "No. 5" set against a colorful and abstract background.
Here is a video of a Lego dance party! I love this!

There were a lot of awesome city scenes.  All of the exhibits were original designs, not made from kits.A detailed LEGO city display featuring buildings, vehicles, a wind turbine, and numerous onlookers at the 2013 Brickworld Convention.A detailed Lego cityscape with various buildings, roads, and a blue water body on a display table, showcased at the 2013 Brickworld Convention.

Here is a video of a train in a city scene.

Daria and her cousins were really entranced by the trains.

I found the Dunkin’ Donuts!A LEGO city scene with a Dunkin' Donuts, Baskin Robbins, a garbage truck, and several mini-figures on the street.

And, of course, the Starbucks!  I had to take a picture of that.

Part Two will be coming soon!

    • Legos are pretty cool! Andrew started really getting into them last year and now I have started to encourage Daria to play with them. I thought the convention was pretty fun.

  1. Do you know the date of next years convention? I would like to take my grandson. He has built Lego villages similar to some of these in the photos. Thanks
