Parody of American Gothic Art Project for 3rd or 4th grade

Child's drawing depicting two cats in party attire, a colorful barn in the background, and speech bubbles. The scene carries a whimsical parody vibe, almost like an American Gothic for kids.

For this lesson, we learned about the artist Grant Wood and his painting “American Gothic.”  The kids read a magazine article about this painting (It was from the 90’s and I think from the New Yorker).  The students discussed what a parody is and saw many examples of parodies of this iconic painting.  Then, the students drew their own version of the “American Gothic”.

American Gothic painting featuring a stern-faced man with a pitchfork and a woman beside him, standing in front of a farmhouse.
Child's drawing of two people standing in front of a house, one holding a pitchfork and the other with blonde hair in a ponytail. It's a 3rd grade parody of American Gothic.

  1. I also like that series of books. I've used them with my Kindergarteners, though I don't read all of it to them. It's really good kid language while still giving good information.
