Art Room Organization

I love organizing things, especially art materials.  It makes it easier to find things you need when your room is organized!  I am always revamping my organizational systems and I feel like my room now is arranged pretty well for my needs.  I am sure I will find some things that need tweaking over the next few years.

On each table I have a plastic drawer set labeled with pencils & eraser, glue sticks & scissors, and markers.  On the top I have a box of crayons and a pencil sharpener.  This has already eliminated a lot of movement around the room to get supplies.

Here is my front bulletin board.  Unfortunately I do not have a lot of space to display things on the walls in my room, but I make do with what I have.  The posters  I bought from here.

I’ve been labeling and consolidating supplies.

The open shelves are nice for quickly grabbing supplies, but it adds to the visual clutter.  I am trying to slowly replace the hodge podge of cardboard and recycled boxes with these solid white stackable ones.  It looks cleaner and more organized.

These are my shelves above the sinks.  It makes sense to keep the paints here.  Since the shelves are also open, it is easy for it to get out of control and look super cluttered.  The flat drawers to the right are where I keep my project examples for each grade level.

Rolling, locking, magnetic cabinets are great for art supplies.  I keep the gray one locked because I keep things like exacto knives, personal items, yearbook cameras and hot glue guns in there.  I bought some new word wall cards that will soon go up on the cabinets.

Here is my wire rack shelf that I use for my classes.  I put the grade level artwork in each box.  Usually I will use a large clip to keep the artwork from one class together.  Things I want to remember to pass back I will stack on top of the box.  Currently there are three boxes of extra supplies on the shelves too, because I am collecting the “communal use” school supplies.  There is enough room for sculptures on this shelf too.  I requested an extra wire shelf like this for more space for in-progress work.  These are cheap shelves and easy to assemble (I bought this one from Menards.)

This is the paper shelf that is open for the kids to take from.  There are some art worksheets, collage papers, scrapbook papers, magazines and other random papers that the kids can take whenever they need.  I have more paper in a storage closet that is off-limits to students.

These are more general supplies that students might ask for at given times such as tape, rulers, glue bottles and more.  The crayon banks and crayon tin box I purchased at Target in the dollar section.

I am trying the covered-table thing this year.  I’ll let you know how it goes and if it helps keep my tables cleaner.

This is an early finisher section with puzzles, Legos, building supplies and more.  I will write a post soon about all of the fun activities on these shelves.

I always love seeing other art teachers rooms. I too like the ease of open shelves but the visual clutter can be too much for some learners. I have used suspension rods, or if it was on something that wouldn’t work I used velcro to hang home made curtains. I opted to go the no sew route and used this kind of tape that holds the mend when ironed. I also have used hot glue when I ran out for one side. 🙂

I was wondering what the long lined narrow strips of paper are on your front board by the posters. How you are going to use them? 🙂

    • Hi! Sorry it took so long to respond. School year is busy so far! The long narrow strips are where the classes can move up by earning points. When they get to the end of the chart, they get a free day in art… lots of art choices, plus games, puzzles, building materials.

Your room looks great! I love me some organization, I just have trouble keeping up with it when things start to get crazy! I’m an organizational work in progress! I tried the cover the whole table with paper thing before, curious to see how you like it… I use giant painting placemats now for messy creating… this way i can go from messy to clean between classes if I need to. I love seeing how everybody organizes their spaces! Have a great year! 🙂
