I am teaching an after school art class for two sessions. We are painting abstract paintings on canvas with acrylic paints! We are also experimenting with spray inks and stencils! Next session, we are going to finish our abstract paintings and then add designs to our sprayed pictures to tie them together.
This project focused on how symbols and designs are used in African art. The students designed their own painted Korhogo cloth. They decorated the border with symbols and drew their main figure with Sharpie. Then, they added paint with watercolors. 1. Introduce African Korhogo cloths.2. Sketch ideas.3. Over the summer I tested out several ways to make bubble prints. I experimented and discovered they way that works best for me. I decided to do bubble printing with some students this week, because it is the week before break and I wanted something fun and out-of-the-ordinary to do with them. To make these fun beach paintings, we started off with a mixture of blue paints and the kids used forks to scrape wave lines on them. Then, we used sea sponges to sponge prints shades of sand colors on the beach. Then, the kids drew and cut out things that would be on a beach. We learned about the artist Georges Seurat by reading Scholastic Art magazine. Students identified and described Pointillist paintings. They created a Pointillist painting of trees showing dimension and form by color mixing. Step 1: Introduce the work of Georges Seurat.Step 2: Choose a smaller sized piece of paper. We used 9 x 12″. This lesson was all about lines. The students first painted a brightly colored background with patches of color. Next, the students painted black lines on top. They focused on painting a variety of types of lines– dashed, dotted, zig zag, straight, spiral, thick, thin, wavy, bumpy, rocky, loopy, etc.
Sunflowers Last year, when the 1st graders were in kindergarten, they planted sunflower seeds in the garden in the back of the school. Over the summer, these flowers grew tall and bloomed radiantly. Each child also brought home a small pot with a sunflower seed in it. Many of the students watched their sunflower grow big and strong.
