Are you looking for a highly engaging art project using chalk pastels? I must admit, chalk pastels are not my favorite. The dust, the crumbles, the mess… and not to mention that chalk gives me the heebie-jeebies (as one kid said at school!)
But, this project, the kids LOVED! They thought it was so exciting. And I love this project because it allows for a lot of creative freedom. It also give students the chance to see the difference between the qualities of CHALK vs. OIL pastels. I saw this technique on Tracy Nichols’ Instagram.
Watch the video below to see the steps.
Chalk Landscape Steps
Supplies you will need (Amazon affiliate links have been used at no extra cost to you. The commissions earned go to maintaining my art resource website!)
● Chalk Pastels (any brand)
● Oil Pastels (any brand)
● 2 pieces of paper, same size
● scissors
● Facial tissue (like Kleenex)
- Gather supplies. Cut across one piece of paper to make a hill, mountain or landform.
- Place the stencil upside down on the bottom of the other piece of paper. Rub chalk off the edge of the stencil to the 2nd piece of paper.
- Use your Kleenex to smear the chalk, while holding the stencil tightly.
- Repeat as needed with different colors to fill the page with hills and landforms.
- Use oil pastels to add details! Be creative! Anything goes.
- Spray with aerosol hairspray to “fix” the chalk.
