Here is a fun and successful project for kids to do at the start of a new year! We did this with my Girl Scout troop of 3rd graders last January at the beginning of the new year. We talked about setting goals and intentions of what we wanted to accomplish such as personal goals for sports and activities, academic goals, goals for Girl Scouts or to be a better person and friend. It was right at the start of cookie selling season, so you’ll see some cookie goals in some of the projects too. This is perfect to go along with teaching the Girl Scout Law, because all of those good qualities we want our girls to have can be turned in to goals!
What we did: During the first meeting, we placed masking tape on top of our canvases, criss-crossed to form designs. I bought masking tape of different sizes and some Martha Stewart skinny tape. Then, we used acrylic craft paints to paint on top of the open spaces.
At the next meeting, we peeled the tape off to reveal the white spaces in between the shapes. In these spaces, they wrote their goals, intentions and positive words. They were able to add patterns and designs with Sharpies and paint markers. They glued on some fun embellishments I had. The girls had a blast and later in the year we had a little art show at a local library! More Girl Scout art projects to come soon…
