Scrap Faces

A face artwork with button eyes, a bead nose, gold string mouth, ribbon headband, and a pink flamingo keychain.

The 1st graders learned about recycled art and how to use unconventional materials in art.  We read 2 books by Hanoch Piven, which feature portraits made out of objects.  The children brought in objects from home that represented aspects of themselves and we assembled the parts into faces in art class.  I had three 8th grade volunteers who helped hot glue everything.  We used foam board and matboard for the base of the faces.   Scroll down to see more examples of the artwork!

A simple smiley face is created using brown sticks for eyebrows, brown circles for eyes and nose, and a green flower for a smile. This charming design is a fun example of scrap faces made from natural materials.

A gardening trowel, a patterned stone with faces, red and white tags, and a plastic-wrapped paintbrush on a white surface.

A Scrap Faces creation using coins for eyes and nose, leaves for the mouth, and long yarn pieces for hair.

A simple face drawing featuring yarn hair, a bow, and colorful paper for eyes and mouth on a white background.

A whimsical face made from yarn, orange buttons, a paper nose, a pencil, and a paintbrush is arranged on a white background. This playful addition to the Scrap Faces series showcases imaginative use of everyday materials.
