Back to School Letter Art for Pre-K, Kindergarten, 1st grade

Hi all! I hope your school year is off to a great start. This project is how I began the year with my youngest students. First, I read them two short books about creativity and making art. First, we read Think Big. It’s very short and simple (about two words on each page), but it shows different ways people express themselves.. dancing, sewing, cooking, woodworking, theater, art, etc.

The title Louise Loves Art has two meanings. Ask your students if they can figure out the two meanings.

To prepare, I printed off the first letter of each of the kindergartners’ names. I used this Free Printable Alphabet from The Spruce. Then I demonstrated how they could fill in their letter with a variety of patterns, designs and colors. You could use only crayons. Or you could branch out to markers and oil pastels.

This was a very interesting activity to quickly assess where students were at in terms of their control of crayons, understanding of concepts and creativity. It is also simple and low-prep.

The “D” at the top of the page was made by me as a demonstration. After I showed a 1st grade class the letter with the rainbow circle, several of the students wanted to try drawing the rainbow circle too.
