Rubber Ducky Public Sculptures in St. Joseph, Michigan

duck sculptures

A couple of weeks ago we took a summer trip to my brother’s cabin in Michigan.  We spent some time in the lovely city of St. Joseph, Michigan.  It is right on Lake Michigan and we enjoyed playing in the sand, walking on the piers, eating ice cream, playing on the beach playground, splashing on the splash pad and tinkering around in the two children’s museums.   As an art teacher, I was delighted to see large public art sculptures of rubber duckies along the streets.  The theme was “Splishin’ and Splashin” and there was a variety of different sculptures, but my favorites were the ducks.

I took pictures of all the ones I saw and I thought it would be fun to show students pictures of these and have them create their own themed rubber duck.  Our receptionist has a large collection of rubber ducks in her office and the students call it “the ducky office.”  So, I think the kids would love this.  Many years ago when the cow parade came to Madison, we drew themed cows and displayed them all together on the walls.  It was super fun!

Here are some pictures of the public sculptures.  On the first day, Daria bought a harmonica with money from Grandma and you can see her playing it in most of the pictures.
