Kindergarten Confetti Hearts for Valentine’s Day!

Confetti Hearts

Here is a fun and beautiful Valentine’s project!   I call it “Confetti Hearts”  with a side of Matisse.  This idea came to me after seeing these painted hearts on Pinterest.

Start by tracing a heart template or free handing it if the kids are older.

Then using one of my favorite products, Kwik Stix, add dashes and dabs of the “paint”  all over the heart, like confetti.  You can surely use oil pastels or paints, but Kwik Stix have the look of paint without the mess.  And kids love them because it feels like drawing with lipstick.

The hearts look gorgeous as they are, but if you want to take this project further, you can teach about organic and geometric shapes by cutting out shapes.  Cut out shapes to fill a background.  You can use squares and rectangles first and then layer other shapes on top.  Or, just place shapes on to a solid color background.

Organic shapes are freeform shapes… like leaves, clouds or blobs!

Geometric shapes are shapes like rectangles, squares and circles.

We cut out construction paper shapes and also used these pre-cut geometric shapes.

This is my finished example.

Here are a few examples from kids who finished today.

kwik sticks have become my ( art teacher on a box) new FAVORITE materials. You are right …. the children love them and no mess!! We made Jim Dine looking hearts with them… thanks for sharing this cute idea:):)

I did this with my ladies who live in a nursing home. They loved these and proudly taped them to the windows of the activities room. It is very unusual for them to like a project enough to want to share it for others to see!

I'd love to hear your thoughts!
